MODEL RELEASED. Corneal abrasion. Bloodshot eye of a 47-year-old man with a corneal abrasion, an injury to the surface of the cornea. The cornea is the transparent layer that covers the iris (blue) and pupil (black). Corneal abrasion results in excessive tear production, discomfort in bright lights (photophobia) and spasms in the eyelid. It can sometimes lead to infection, which in turn may lead to ulceration and scarring of the cornea.
