Roman oven. This oven is located in what is thought to have been the equivalent of a fast food outlet, in the Roman town of Herculaneum, located in modern-day Ercolano, near Naples, Italy. Herculaneum was destroyed in the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in 79 AD. However, the thick layer of volcanic ash that buried the town preserved buildings, bodies and other artefacts that were later excavated.
