The name MONITOR AND MERRIMAC 2388 MONKEY monitor is attributable to the belief formerlyheld that these lizards gave warning of theapproach of crocodiles. MONITOR AND MERRIMAC, two curi-ously shaped war vessels which were engagedin battle on March 9, 1862, in the AmericanCivil War. The Merrimac was equippedwith a peaked roof sloping upward from thedeck; the entire exterior was heavily iron-clad.
