TREES IN THEIR LEAFLESS As the season for Arbor Day andtree planting comes on, just before thebuds begin to swell and are gettingready to cover the trees with a freshmantle of leaves, it is well—as it is alsowhen the leaves have fallen from thetrees in autumn—to give attention tothe bare trees and notice the character-istic forms of the various species, themanner m which their branches aredeveloped and arranged among them-selves, for a knowledge of these things^ will often enable one to distinguish the , dillerent kinds of trees more readily and certainly than by any other foliage often ser\^es as an obscuring veil, concealing, in part, atleast, the individuality and the x^eculiarities of the trees. But if oneis familiar with their forms of growth—their skeleton anatomy, so tospeak—he will recognize common trees at once with only a partial viewof them.
