Transgenic rice research. Researcher studying transgenic rice seedlings growing in petri dishes. Transgenic plants are plants that have been genetically engineered to contain one or more genes not found in that species. This is part of a project undertaken by the French Centre for Agricultural Research for Developing Countries (CIRAD) to create 50,000 transgenic strains of rice. Such research has developed strains of rice that have enhanced drought tolerance and fungal resistance.
