Heinz lead-acid battery. Historical illustration of the accumulator (storage) lead-acid battery designed by the A. Heinz company of Levallois, France. The lead-acid battery was invented by French physicist Gaston Plante (1834-1889) in 1859. His design was improved on by later inventors who built sealed and portable versions, such as the lead-acid battery shown here, which has plates of lead oxide paste pressed into a lattice and immersed in sulphuric acid.
