. The street railway review . ystem. To provide against sucli acci-dent relief valves, designed to automatically open when the vacuumin the condenser is broken, are placed in the piping of con-densing engines. The illustration shows a late type of automatic exhaust relief valvemanufactured by the Crane Co., of Chicago, for use in the con-densing system of reciprocating or turbine engines, when operatingcondensing only. This type of valve is made in horizontal, verticaland angle patterns, the horizontal pattern being the subject of theillustration. By referring to the illustration it will be seen that aslong as a vacuum is maintained in the condenser atmospheric pres-sure will maintain the valve in a closed position, but should thevacuum be lost the steam pressure of the engine exhaust will liftthe disk from its seat and the engine exhaust through a suitably con-nected pipe to the atmosphere. Whenever the vacuum is valve from its own weight and the atmospheric pressure willautomatically AUTOMATIC EXHAUST RELIEF VALVE. As at each stroke of the engine the pressure in the condenservaries, it is necessary to provide some method of cushioning the diskor it would soon destroy itself from continued pounding. To pre-vent this trouble a dash pot forms a part of the disk casting. Thisdash pot in each of the patterns of valves is directly above thedisk so that there is little opportunity for it to become fouled byoil and dirt in the exhaust steam and thus become inoperative. Thecasting of the valve is so designed that the seat of the disk is sub-merged in a water seal one-half inch deep. This is found to be avaluable feature where it is desired to maintain a very high design provides a positive arrangement for holding the valvewide open in case it is necessary to run non-condensing. EUREKA AUTOMATIC ELECTRIC SIGNALS. The fundamental idea of Eureka signals is the operation of onlyone controller, to set the system to danger when cars enter
