In this fresco Giotto has abandoned the frenetic movement typical of Byzantine scenes of the Deposition to return to an older, fuller, more solemn expressiveness reminiscent of Greek tragedy. Like an arrow, the rocky ridge in the background descends to indicate the emotional fulcrum of the composition: the juxtaposed heads of Mary and Christ. The figures in this scene have been given a corporeality that makes them among the most impressive of fourteenth-century art. *** Keywords: ************* Author: GIOTTO di Bondone Title: No. 36 Scenes from the Life of Christ: 20.
