Preface IN preparing this little book on Brazil, I havebeen actuated chiefly by the desire to helpto make known a country which is still, so to speak,terra incognita to Europeans generally, and onewhich I venture to say will repay them to makea closer study of. It is not possible, in a work of so cursory andslight a character, to do more than lightly touchupon the many points of varied interest which acountry such as Brazil offers to the minds of thought-ful persons. I have, therefore, merely endeavouredto say a few words about the country in which somany of the best years of my life have been spent,because I find that the few ideas people do possessabout it on this side of the Atlantic are, generallyspeaking, very fragmentary and often entirelyerroneous.
