Gudea was prince of the independent kingdom of Lagash in southern Mesopotamia, in the late 3rd millennium. He was known for his piety and for the many temples he built. This statuette is the only complete extant statues of a series of diorite representations of Gudea. The inscription engraved on his robe indicates that it is dedicated to the god Ningishzida. This statue was found during the excavations at Tello (ancient Girsu), capital of the kingdom of Lagash (in present-day Iraq).
