The violet-backed starling is a small, sexually dimorphic bird found in sub-Saharan Africa. The male has a striking iridescent plumage, with a violet head, back, wings, face, and throat, contrasting sharply with the pure white underparts. The female is much less colorful, with a brown, boldly-streaked upperparts and white, heavily-streaked underparts. Both sexes have yellow irises and black bills and legs.
