Glutamine synthetase molecule. Computer model showing the structure of bacterial glutamine synthetase composed of 12 identical subunits (pink, cyan). Each subunit has an active site which contains (among others) adenosine-5'-diphosphate whose atoms are colour-coded: carbon (grey), nitrogen (blue), oxygen (red) and phosphorus (yellow). This ligase enzyme forms chemical bonds between molecules. It plays an important role in the metabolism of nitrogen by catalysing the condensation of glutamate and ammonia to form glutamine.
