The Federal Correctional Institution, Thomson (FCI Thomson), formerly United States Penitentiary, Thomson and Thomson Correctional Center. The facility is classified as low security and encompasses both prison buildings and a camp. The facility was originally built by the State of Illinois as the Thomson Correctional Center, being completed in 2001 however it remained empty and was purchased from the state by the federal government via the Bureau of Prisons in 2012. It was originally planned to transfer detainees from Guantanamo Bay to the facility but that was blocked by Congress.
