The Casspir Project by Ralph Ziman 2106. A South African military vehicle, a symbol of oppression during apartheid, covered in glass beads, thread and glue. On display outside Izoko South African National Gallery. The artists hope it is a project of reclamation. But for others, it reawakens the painful memories from when casspirs were used in urban areas against civilians, The brightly coloured panels of glass beads arranged in traditional patterns were completed by women from Zimbabwe and the Mpumalanga province of South Africa including women of the Ndebele tribe known for their craftsmanship. Casspirs were designed in South Africa in the late seventies and used extensively by the South African Police and South African Defense Force.
