Jovian satellites diagram, 17th century. The title text is in Latin. The shadow (umbra) of Jupiter is shown, along with the orbits of the four satellites discovered by Galileo in 1610. From from inner to outer (left to right) they are: Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. The astrological symbol for Jupiter is also included. This artwork is from Argoli's Ephemerides (1659) by the Italian astronomer and scholar Andrea Argoli (1570-1657). An ephemerides is a table of astronomical data showing the positions of astronomical objects in the sky for a range of different times.
