The 25 foot high Pyramid stands in the churchyard of Brightling Church, East Sussex, the last resting place of John "Mad Jack" Fuller MP. The pyramid was one of a number of "follies" built by Fuller in the surrounding area. After his death, and burial, in the pyramid a local legend grew that he had not been buried in the normal fashion. To reflect his lifestyle he was said to have been interred sat at an iron table laid for a feast. There was a bottle of claret to hand and Fuller was sat in a top hat, dressed for dinner. The floor was strewn with broken glass to keep the devil out. It's a pity the story was found to be untrue when the rotting door to the pyramid had to be replaced and Fuller was found to be buried in the conventional was in the floor of the tomb. Today an iron grill allows the curious to view the inside of the tomb. Although he was very bit the local Squire he cared very much for the people of Brightling, especially during hard times.
