Foot and mouth disease vaccine research. Veterinary medical officer (left) and microbiologist discussing the distribution and characterisation of foot and mouth disease virus (FMDV) cells at the primary site of infection in the nasopharynx of cows. The nasopharynx is a potential target for more effective FMD vaccines. FMDV affects cloven-hooved mammals, commonly cattle and pigs, and is highly contagious.
