The people shared this feeling, believing that by theresidence of a missionary among them they would obtain some important,benefits, though of the real character of the blessing they might receivethey were totally ignorant. A rival of the young king existed in the person of a cousin, Mpepe,who had been appointed by the late king chief over a portion ofhis subjects, but whose ambition made him aim at the command of thewhole.
