The Monument of Prince Jozef Poniatowski, currently in the courtyard of the Presidential Palace at 46/48 Krakowskie Przedmiescie, shows the Prince riding a horse, holding a sword in his right hand, and modelled after a monument of Marcus Aurelius on Rome's Capitoline Hill. The monument was commissioned in 1817 from the Danish sculptor, Bertel Thorvaldsen. The bronze statue was completed in August 1832. As a result of the failed November Uprising of 1830-31, against Imperial Russian rule, the Tsar withdrew permission to place the statue in front of the Governor's Palace (now the Presidential Palace). The statue then moved between various locations. It returned to Poland in 1922, standing, for a time, in the courtyard of the Royal Castle. The monument was blown up by the Germans, 16 December 1944. Using a model housed in a Copenhagen museum, a new cast of the sculpture was made between 1948 and 1951. In 1965, the monument moved to the courtyard of the Presidential Palace. Prince Jozef Poniatowski (7 May 1863 - 19 October 1813) was a Polish leader, general and Marshall of the French Empire. Born in Vienna, he was the nephew of the last king of Poland, Stanislaw 11 Augustus. He was an inspiration to Polish freedom fighters, including those in the Second World War.
