Zadonsk is a the unique city in the Lipetsk region with three active monasteries, from the XVIII century and to this day it is considered an important orthodox center of Russia («the Russian Jerusalem»). Zadonsk, a historical city, appeared in the first half of the XVII century, and was closely connected with the Zadonsky Monastery of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The submonastic settlement gave rise to formation of the city. Throughout all its history the monastery influenced the formation of spiritual, cultural and material resources of the city. In the XIX century the popularity of a monastery reached the incredible sizes (it was connected with the canonization of prelate Tikhon), at this time the city grew and developed as a pilgrimage center, and service of pilgrims made the main income of the population. Today, when the monastery revived after the Soviet period, its role as spiritual and educational center increased even more. Monastery of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is engaged in social and spiritual and educational activity, helps the restoration of churches of the area. Zadonsk becomes again the pilgrimage center.
