View N of the Newport Arch Roman gateway, the N gate of the walled colonia (a town for retired legionaries & their families) of LINDVM, Lincoln, England, UK. Built in the early C3rdAD over Ermine Street (A15) the main Roman road from London to Lincoln & then N to the Humber. The original Roman road level is (8ft) below the present & there would have been a pedestrian tunnel at either side flanked by projecting towers. The inner (S) face of the gate is Roman but the rest, including the tunnel, is medieval on top of Roman work. The masonry has been restored at various times in the 18th & 19th centuries, & in 1964 after it was damaged by a lorry.
