A Puss moth caterpillar, Cerura vinula, in its second stage of development, known as an instar. It is seen here on a sallow leaf which is one of its food plants. After several instars in which the caterpillar sheds it skin each time, the adult caterpillar is capable of producing formic acid to ward off predators and also has two scarlet whip-like appendages or flagellae which it is capable of extending from its twin tail.
