Arachnophobia, the fear of spiders. A fearful man with a large spider on his cheek. The view of the feared animal usually triggers intense anxiety and sometimes a panic attack. Animal phobias, also known as zoophobias, typically start in childhood; treatment is not usually required unless the feared animal is so common that it is not easily avoided. The most effective treatment is behaviour therapy sometimes combined with antidepressant drugs.
