Ripening rice adds yellow and gold colors to the rice terraces that can be seen along the road from Lao Cai to Sa Pa in northern Vietnam, near the southern border with Yunnan Province in China. This mountainous area that straddles the Vietnam and Chinese borders lies in the drainage area of the Red River. From the thickness of the trees between the areas of terraces, and the steep slopes, one can appreciate the amount of labor (done by hand and water buffalo) that must have been involved in creating the terraces. Water buffalo such as this big bull with attitude seen in the yard of a local farm.
