Spring beauty plants (Claytonia perfoliata) covering a woodland floor. This trailing plant is native to North America. Introduced in the 18th Century, it has become an invasive alien species in some areas of Britain. It is edible, and was an important source of vitamin C for the California goldrush miners. Photographed in East Lothian, Scotland, in April.
