For manyyears the bowl of the Deerhurst font was in useat a farmhouse, whence it was rescued in 1845 andplaced in Longdon Church, Worcestershire, whereit remained until 1870, when the discovery of thestem resulted in the complete font being restoredto Deerhurst. The leaden font at Barnetby-le-\^old, Lincolnshire, was found some years agoin the church coal-house, and large numbers offonts have known long periods of disuse since theReformation. It may be taken as a general rulethat if a font is found eastward of the centre of thenave it has been removed from its original Norman fonts we have a large number. Someof these are plain hollow cylinders ; others aremassive squares borne on a large central stem andon small shafts at the corners. Of this type theWinchester font is a good exam
