The first of the so-called Tobacco Wives or Tobacco Brides arrive in Jamestown, Virginia, USA in 1620. The Virginia Company of London who had founded Jamestown realized that the nearly all-male colony could not survive without women. An offer in England to pay the passage of any woman willing to travel to America and perhaps marry a Jamestown bachelor attracted 90 women who arrived in 1620 and a further 56 who made the journey in 1621 and 1622.
