E. coli O55 bacterium. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a bacterium of the rare O55 strain of Escherichia coli. E. coli is a rod-shaped bacterium (bacillus) an enterobacter, part of the normal content of human and animal digestive systems. However, under certain conditions it can cause gastroenteritis and urinary tract infections. Some strains also cause food poisoning. An outbreak of the O55 strain occurred in Dorset, UK, in 2015. The long thread-like structures are flagella, used by the bacterium to move itself. Magnification: x21,000 when printed 10cm wide.
