Measuring snow density in Swedish Lapland. The glaciologist is weighing an ice core sample of known volume to measure its density. The density of the snow allows the amount of winter snow accumulation on the surrounding Storglaciaren glacier to be calculated, which can then be offset against the amount lost through melting in the summer. This gives the mass balance of the surrounding glacier, which can be used to track the effects of climate change. Measurement of the Storglaciaren glacier began in 1945, making it the world's longest mass balance record. Photographed in 2006.
