The greater partof his youth was spent at home working-on his fathers farm in the summer, andattending the district school in the win-ter, being one of Dr. John R. Parkslirst pupils in Utah. Under the influ-ence of his father, who took a great in-terest in education, he made up hismind to become a teacher. While stilla student in the district school he wasemployed to teach school in West Jor-dan, Salt Lake county. When twentyyears old, he entered the Uni-versity of Deseret and was graduatedfrom several of its courses. Later, hereceived a masters degree from the. same institution. After his graduation,he was engaged to teach in his nativetown and has since remained a 1884 he married Sarah E. Taylor,daughter of Abram Taylor and Char-lotte Tabberer. In 1885 he was electedsuperintendent of schools for Salt Lakecounty, and was trice re-elected. Hewas apointed and served three termsas regent of the University of 1887 he was elected director of theNational Educational Association forUtah, and the next year he took a largedelegation of Utah teachers to the con-vention of the same association in SanFrancisco, Cal. Prof. Stewart be-came a member of the faculty of theT:fniversity of Utah in 1888, takingcharge of the normal school and occu- 1 lying the chair of pedagogy.
