After studying atRock River seminary in Mount Morris, he enteredGenesee college, Lima, N. Y., where he was gradu-ated in 1859. He soon afterward began the studyof law at Chicago, but soon after this he was con-verted and at once changed his purpose, began acourse of preparation for the ministry, and in 1861was graduated at Garrett Biblical institute, Evans-ton, 111. The same year he was admitted on trialinto the Rock River conference of the Methodist FOWLER FOWLER 517. Episcopal church, and was appointed successivelyto churches in Chicago, (ill in 1872 he was electedpresident of Northwestern university. lie heldthis office till 187(5, when he was elected by thegeneral conference to the editorship of the NewYork Christian Advocate. Four years later he was elected one ofthe correspondingsecretaries of themissionary society ofthe Methodist Epis-copal church, and in1884 he was electedand ordained received the de-gree of D. D. fromthe Northwesternuniversity, and after-ward that of LL. Syracuse uni-versity, N. Y. Hewas a delegate to thegeneral conferencesof 1872, 1876, 1880,. yp and 1884. His residence is atSan Francisco, and he has devoted a large share ofhis labors to the interests of the Methodist Episco-pal church in
