He has been en-gaged in the scientific investigation of dairyproblems for the past ten years, and duringthat lime has earned a wide repulatioii forhis work on dairy type, and for his publi-cations on Feeding Dairy (ows. was born at Liverpool, Medicinecounty, Ohio, May 4, 1840, of German des-cent. His educationalfacilities were limited to an attendance at thedistrict school in the winter until he wassixteen years of ap:e, his summers being spenton the farm. In 1803, he entered the stateuniversity at Madison, Wis., but was compel-led to give up his studies the following springon account of sickness. He then enlisted inCompany A, Thiitv-seventh Wisconsin In-fantry, and was detailed to clerical work atheadquarters. Tliis did not prevent him fromseeing active service, however, and duringthe siege of Vicksburg he distinguished him-self for bravery. After the siege he wasplaced on detached service in the medicaldepartment at City Point, where he was rap-idly promoted until he had charge of all thequartei-masters supi)lies of the Ninth Coi-pshosiiital department.
