Supernova remnant. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of the supernova remnant 0509 (SNR 0509), showing the sphere of gas. This is a Type 1a supernova, which results from the explosion of a white dwarf star in a binary system. The sphere measures 23 light years across and is expanding at more than 5000 kilometres per second. It is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) approximately 160,000 light years from Earth. Image taken by the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the HST on 28th October 2006.
