Dorsal view of skull referred to T. veroensis (hmns 160). tremendous development might be expected to be initiated earlier than in animals with minimal development of the crest. The saggittal crest of T. pinchaque (Fig. If) is low and developed to the same degree as it is in T. veroensis and the new Texas skull. These crests are formed by the slight upward crimping of the parietals at their junction. The fact that young specimens of T. pinchaque were not available to Simpson (1945) explains his use of T. terrestris for comparison. Not only have we examined a young T. pinchaque skull, but there are now two additional fossil skulls in which this region is preserved. The young T. pinchaque skull (Fig. lc) has a sagittal table with a pair of "escarpments" not unlike those of the holotype of T. excelsus. The "table" is narrower than that of Simpson's specimen, but this individual, judging by the eruption of M2, was slightly older at the time of death. A fossil from the Itchtucknee River, Florida (Fig. 1b; uf 14064) has M1 and M2 fully erupted, but P4 is just coming in. This specimen also has a sagittal table but it is narrower than that of the young T. pinchaque skull. The measurements of the teeth of this specimen fall well within the demonstrated size range for T.
