It was in the last year of the thirties at Miami Universitythat Beta Theta Pi was born. John Reily Knox, who isnow a Greenville, Ohio, attorney, first suggested the ideaof establishing a fraternity, to a half dozen of his collegeassociates at Oxford, Ohio. The plan met with approvaland as a result, a new college fraternity, destined to rankamong the best of such organizations, blossomed forth. For manyyears it was confined to the South and West, but by its union withAlpha Sigma Chi in 1879, a strong foothold was gained in the East. This fraternity is noted for the loyalty of its alumni, who as a ruleare interested in the organization long after they have quitted collegehalls. Alumni chapters have been, established in many of the largercities. Four different song books have been issued; a new catalogue isnow being edited. The supreme authority is vested in the conventionswhich are held every summer at the fraternitys club house at Wooglinon lake Chautauqua. The official
