This image may not be used to state or imply NOAA endorsement of any company or product Map showing the rate of exchange of carbon dioxide (CO2) between the ocean and the atmosphere in 2100. In areas where the concentration of CO2 is higher in the air than the water, C02 is absorbed by the oceans (green). In areas where the concentration of CO2 is higher in the water than the air, CO2 is released to the atmosphere (blue). Colder water can absorb more C02 than warm water, leading to sinks at the poles. As atmospheric CO2 levels increase with the burning of fossil fuels, larger areas will become absorbing regions. Absorption of CO2 by the oceans causes them to become more acidic. Computer model based on predictions for future CO2 emissions.
