Burgoyne sent Colonel Baum with about fifteenhundred men, to seize some provisions at Bennington, John Stark, who, with a smallbody of soldiers, was on his way tojoin Gates, attacked the British, killedBaum, and took many prisoners. On September 19, Burgoyne at-tacked Gates at Saratoga. The battlelasted all day and both sides claimedthe victory. On October 7, herenewed the attack and was days later, seeing the hope-lessness of his position,
