The Americans under General Gates, fell back slowly beforethe British, but continually harassed them and cut off theirsupplies. Burgoyne sent Colonel Baum with about fifteenhundred men, to seize some provisions at Bennington, John Stark, who, with a smallbody of soldiers, was on his way tojoin Gates, attacked the British, killedBaum, and took many prisoners. On September 19, Burgoyne at-tacked Gates at Saratoga. The battlelasted all day and both sides claimedthe victory. On October 7, herenewed the attack and was days later, seeing the hope-lessness of his position,
