The kitchen was then in the low room (z), above which . 33* POMPKII. was a correspondingly low chamber, the height of the two roomsbeing only equal to that of the dining room (/). In later times, however, the hearth was moved to thecorner of the atrium (i), the smoke be-ing let out through a small window inthe wall. A stairway, partly of wood,led to the upper rooms at the front ofthe house. Along the street ran a stonebench, protected by a roof projectingover it. The water from the roofs fell into thelight court f, and was collected in a cis-tern. We give a transverse sectionacross f and g (Fig. 168), showing thearrangement of the roofs, doors, andwindow at the rear.
