Stomach disorders. Artwork showing a normal stomach (left), acid reflux (centre) and a hiatus hernia (right). Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), also known as acid reflux, is an advanced form of heartburn. It occurs when the sphincter separating the stomach and the oesophagus (top) does not close properly and stomach acid leaks back into the oesophagus. A hiatus hernia is the protrusion of part of the stomach into the chest cavity through the hole, known as the hiatus, that the oesophagus passes through.
