First Shuttle-Mir mission. The historic moment when Shuttle Commander Robert 'Hoot' Gibson (right) and Mir-18 Commander Vladimir Dezhurov met after their two craft had docked on 29 June 1995. This was the first joint US-Russian space mission for 20 years; the last was the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project of 1975. Shuttle Mission STS-71 flew on 27 June to 7 July 1995. The Shuttle carried a relief crew to the Russian space station, returning the previous crew to Earth. STS-71 was the first of six planned flights of the Shuttle to the Mir space station.
