Tycho at his observatory of Stjerneborg. The observatory of Stjerneborg was an underground observatory next to the main observatory of Uraniborg, both built on the island of Hven between 1576 and 1581 for Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe (1546-1601). These observatories were used to make the most accurate naked-eye measurements yet made of the position of the stars. Two assistants are operating a large triangular sextant (see C040/4002), with Tycho Brahe (with his silver nose) directing the observations at far left. Constellations are shown in the night sky, with a comet and the Moon.
