View from the Zugspitzplatt plateau towards the summit of Zugspitze with Environmental Research Station Schneefernerhaus to the left. Base station for permafrost and glacier research located on the southern slopes of the Zugspitze mountain above the Schneeferner glacier. In the late 1990s a hotel called the Schneefernerhaus closed down and its premises were adapted to use as an environmental research station. Its main task is to measure accurately and carefully changes in atmospheric pollution. There are many places like this around the world and the sum of their research adds greatly to our knowledge about global warming and climate change. To the right the summit of Zugspitze with the golden cross, the cable car station with the peak restaurants. Zugspitze is the highest point in Germany at 2,962m above sea level. It is located on the Austrian border beside the town of Grainau in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the federal-state of Bavaria. The border goes right through the mountain. The climb of the last metres from the peak area to touch the golden cross at the absolute summit is a very popular sport for athletic visitors.
