Italy, Naples Bay and Vesuvious. This fine view shows the sun just rising above the peaks of Mt Vesuvious. It was Aug. 24th in the year of AD 79 that the eruptions occurred which caused Pompeii and Herculaneum to be buried in its lava and left the two towns as living museums for future generations. Pliny the elder must have had this view of it as he began to write about it.
