Woodcut: 1567Printer's Mark of Jost Amman: an angel blows twin pipes; cherubs with wreaths; cockerel and a dove

A winged bare-footed angel dances on an urn, playing twin pipes or trumpets; to either side a naked cherub, or winged putti, proffers her a wreath of laurel leaves. Beneath her is a watering-fountain where two birds are perched: one a cockerel or rooster (a male chicken) and the other perhaps a pigeon or dove. The woodcut was made by Jost Ammon and used by Sigmund Feyrabend in his printing company along with Weigand Hanund George Rab; this one was printed in 1567. The printers mark or logo appears reproduced in A. F. Butsch's "Die Bücher-Ornamentik Der Renaissance" (handbook of Renaissance Ornament), Leipzig, 1881.
