Wedding ceremony of Cuban transgender woman, Malu Cano, a transgender rights advocate, that took place during Transgender educational & advocacy weekend in Trinidad organized by Cenesex - Cuban National Center for Sex Education. Since same-sex marriage is still illegal in Cuba, it was a symbolic wedding to promote acceptance of gay and transgender Cubans in a country once notoriously hostile toward them. (At the beginning of Fidel Castro's revolution, gays and transsexuals were locked up or sent to labor camps. Castro admitted in 2010 that he had been wrong to discriminate against gays). Public attitudes are changing in Cuba mostly thanks to the advocacy work of Mariela Castro, daughter of Cuba's President Raul Castro, who is director of the Cuban National Center for Sex Education and also National Assembly member, but same-sex marriage and civil unions remain illegal. Many of the trans women are still harassed, detained by police and it’s hard for them to get jobs, so they have no choice but to become prostitutes.
