Most of the damage was caused on the night of 11/12 September 1944, when 226 Avro Lancasters and 14 De Havilland Mosquitos of No. 5 Group carried out an outstandingly accurate and successful raid in which 432 out of 745 acres of the built-up area were destroyed and at least 8,500 people killed.
