Origin of the Town Name—.The consideration of this has beenpurposely omitted with the hope that before the volume was completedsome information might be obtained that would satisfactorily dispose of theuncertainty surrounding it. It has been said and repeated many times thatBoothbay took its name from Old Boothbay in England. This wasundoubtedly guesswork, suggested by the fact that many early towns tooksecondhand names. It has been many times copied, for copying is easierthan investigating. I have all the modern gazetteers and severalthat were a century or more in age. Two well-known librarians, who pos-sess capacity for such work, have rendered assistance. We are all of theopinion that there is not now, and never has been, a place in England orelsewhere by the name of Boothbay or Old Boothbay, other than that nameappl
