Messier 85 is either a luminous lenticular galaxy or an elliptical galaxy located in the constellation Coma Berenices. Messier 85 is around 50 million light-years from Earth and forms part of the Virgo Cluster of galaxies. Messier 85 is thought to be interacting with two neighbouring galaxies. Charles Messier, the 18th century French astronomer, catalogued over 100 galaxies and clusters. Through the telescopes available at the time, comets, nebulae, globular clusters and galaxies appeared just as faint, diffuse blobs. This image was taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.
