Varna, situated on the shores of the BlackSea, in the province of Bulgaria, is a fortifiedtown and seaport, 160 miles to the north-west ofConstantinople, and contains about 14,000 inha-bitants. Its site is a gentle height on the north-west side of a semicircular bay formed by tworocky promontories; and, like many other townswhich have been for a length of time in possessionof the Tuiks, it exhibits the usual melancholysymptoms of neglect and decay; for it is butslightly fortified, its houses, which are chiefly ofwood, are irregularly placed, and it has
