An old engraving of a cylinder electrical machine from the 1800s. It is from Victorian book of the 1890s on sports, games and pastimes. In this frictional electrical machine, the glass cylinder is rotated by a handle. The cylinder rubs against a cushion of material such as silk resting on the outer surface (not shown in the illustration). The friction created produces an electrical charge. Conductors, on glass legs, are placed each side of the machine. One conductor is charged positively (+), the other conductor (attached to the pad) is charged negatively (–). The current was then earthed.

In this frictional electrical machine, the glass cylinder is rotated by a handle. The cylinder rubs against a cushion of material such as silk resting on the outer surface (not shown in the illustration). The friction created produces an electrical charge. Conductors, isolated on glass legs, are placed each side of the machine. One conductor is charged positively (+), the other conductor (attached to the pad) is charged negatively (–). Any current produced can be earthed. Frictional electrical machines such as this (also known as ‘English pattern’ machines) were made by English optician and scientific instrument maker Edward Nairne in the late 1700s.
